Floor Tape FAQs:

What is floor marking tape, and what is its primary purpose?
Floor marking tape is a highly visible adhesive tape designed for marking, identifying and outlining areas on the floor. Its primary purpose is to improve safety, organization and efficiency within a workplace. Floor tapes are commonly used to mark pedestrian walkways, designate storage areas, indicate potential hazards and guide traffic flow.

Is there a specific color standard for 5S floor marking?
No. You can make it suit your needs, whatever works for you. But you must be consistent with colors and make sure everyone understands your color scheme. Here's a recommended scheme: Yellow for aisles, traffic lanes or work cells. Red for defects, red tag areas or scrap. Orange for product inspection or energized equipment. Green for Kanban / finished process stage. Blue for Tools and equipment. Black for materials or manufacturing in progress. Red/white stripe for fire safety. Orange/black stripe for caution.

How can I make straight lines with floor tape?
Snap a chalk line. It's really that simple. Snap a chalk line, lay the tape down next to the line. Some tapes are more difficult to work with. Vinyl tape is rolled onto itself and it's very rubbery, so it can stretch and be hard to get a nice straight line. A vinyl floor tape applicator can help. Heavy-duty tapes with a backing are easier to work with. You can peel about two feet of the backing, lay that tape down on the chalk line, then pull more backing and just keep going.

How can I make sure floor tape sticks?
The key to making any floor taping solution last is to install the tape properly. Tapes will only work as expected if you follow three important steps when installing:
1. Clean - A good sweep and wash are usually enough.
2. Dry - Make sure your newly cleaned floors are totally dry.
3. Tamp - Don't rely on your feet or hands to tamp down your new tape. High-quality tapes are made with pressure-sensitive adhesive, which means they require excessive weight to press them into the floor. Use a tape tamper, landscape roller, or the real wheel of a forklift. Move in the direction you laid your tape.

How can I make floor tape last a long time?
The most common cause of tape failure is people dragging pallets. Dragging pallets violates OSHA forklift driving regulations. Make a no-drag standard for your forklift drivers. Also, you need to choose the right tape for your floors. There are porous floor tapes and smooth floor tapes. The adhesives aren't the same, and the durability isn't the same.

What width do floor lines have to be?
OSHA standards require lines to be at least two inches wide. Anything above that will be acceptable to meet the standard. Most tapes are between two and four inches. Aisles generally need to be at least 36 inches wide. OSHA has regulations for aisle width related to combustibles and exit routes. States sometimes have specific regulations, as well.

How can I remove old floor tape?
It will depend a bit on the type of tape. Some heavy-duty tapes can be removed by pulling at a 90-degree angle to break the adhesive bond. A floor scraper will make the job easier for any tape.
