Out of Service Tags - What To Know:
Using out of service tags for industrial equipment helps prevent accidents. Use these tags to clearly communicate that a piece of equipment or machinery is not in operating condition. Help prevent accidental use, ensuring the safety of workers and maintaining compliance with safety regulations.
Equipment out of service tags are not required by OSHA - but they are a best practice. While OSHA does not explicitly mandate the use of out of service tags, they are considered a best practice for safety. OSHA requires effective communication of hazards, and using tags helps achieve this by clearly marking non-operational equipment.
Use an out of service tag whenever equipment is malfunctioning or cannot be used safely. Tagging is especially important when it is not immediately obvious the machine or tool is unsafe. They are often used during scheduled maintenance or repair, after an unexpected shutdown or power outage, or when a safety improvement or modification in progress.
There are different types of out of service tags for specific equipment. You can find tags specifically designed for machines, electrical equipment or high-risk scenarios. Lockout Tagout tags should be used when machinery is locked out for service. Review OSHA 1910.147 for lockout tagout requirements.
Don't reuse out of service tags. These tags should be signed and dated by the person installing the tag, with additional notes on equipment condition or repairs needed. Trying to reuse a tag could create confusion for future users. Our tags are economical, so you can use a new tag every time without concern.
Where and how to apply out of service tags. Place the tags in an easily visible position - typically at power switches or controls. You can use tag wires, zip ties or other fasteners to be sure your tags remain secure until the equipment is ready for use. We offer economical stainless steel wire ties to use with safety tags.
