Water Pipelines in the U.S.

Water utility pipelines play a crucial role in delivering clean and safe drinking water to communities across the country. These pipelines transport water from sources to treatment plants and on to about 87% of the U.S. population. Surface sources, such as rivers and lakes, account for 74% of all water withdrawals.

An estimated 6 billion gallons of treated water are lost daily because of leaks. Some 240,000 water main breaks occur each year.

Various government agencies at federal, state and local levels regulate water pipelines. The primary federal agency involved in water pipeline regulation is the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). PHMSA establishes rules, conducts inspections and oversees the enforcement of pipeline safety standards.

Water pipelines are also subject to environmental regulations, such as the Clean Water Act (CWA). The CWA is a federal statute that aims to prevent, reduce and eliminate pollution in the nation's water.

Water utility pipelines increasingly incorporate smart technologies such as IoT sensors, data analytics and predictive maintenance systems. These technologies enable utilities to monitor pipeline conditions in real time, identify potential issues proactively, and optimize system performance.
