Accessible Parking Signs:
- Best for businesses and other facilities that must mark handicap and van-accessible parking spaces
- Use these signs to direct people with disabilities to accessible parking spaces and to remind non-disabled drivers to park elsewhere
- Any business or facility with handicap and van accessible parking needs these signs
- Federal accessible parking signs do not use the terms "handicapped parking" or "disabled parking" due to Department of Justice efforts to avoid stereotypes and make use of up-to-date terminology (28CFR35.104).
- All states must adhere to Federal standards, but some states require specific text or additional information on accessible parking space signs, such as "permit required" or violation fines.

Handicap Parking Signs FAQ:
How many handicap spaces do I need in my parking area?
That depends on the number of spaces in your lot, and your business type. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires lots with 1-25 spaces to have at least 1 accessible space. Lots with 26-50 require 2 handicap spots. Some medical facilities require additional accessible spaces. See more details here.
What signs do I need for handicap parking spaces?
The ADA requires signs that include the International Symbol of Accessibility (wheelchair symbol) to mark accessible parking spaces. Note: Some states and localities require the Dynamic Accessibility Symbol.
Are van-accessible parking spaces required?
Yes. The ADA requires that one of every six accessible parking spaces, or fraction of six, must be van-accessible. So, if you have between 1 and 6 handicap parking spaces, at least 1 must be van-accessible.
Do van-accessible parking spaces require additional signs?
Yes. Van-accessible spaces must include the additional phrase van-accessible. This can be satisfied with a specific Van Accessible sign, or by adding a supplemental sign below a standard handicap parking sign.
How high should handicap parking signs be mounted?
ADA signs should be mounted so the lower edge of the sign is at least five feet above the ground. They are often mounted on sign posts or on walls in front of the parking space. They key is to make the sign easily visible.
I have just 4 parking spaces. Do I need a sign?
No. Handicap signs are not required in parking lots with four spaces or less. However, the lot must still have accessible spaces. Anyone is allowed to park in the accessible space.
Do apartment or condo parking lots need handicap parking signs?
If parking lot spaces are assigned to specific residential units, signs are not required for accessible spaces.
Are handicap parking rules the same everywhere?
No. State and local governments can have their own requirements, which may be more or less specific than ADA rules. See state-specific handicap parking signs.
Can I make a custom handicap parking sign?
Of course. One of our custom parking sign makers includes correct symbols for the universal symbol of accessibility as well as the Dynamic Accessibility Symbol.
