What fire and emergency exit signs do I need? Egress EXIT sign must be UL listed exit sign.  UL listed exit signs can be hard wired, with a battery back up or photoluminescent. Photoluminescent do not require any power and meet the NFPA standard for Exit signs.  ALL EGRESS EXIT SIGNS MUST BE UL LISTED on them.

Though regulations vary by state and municipality, all buildings must have exit signs (and “No exit” signs) per OSHA requirements. OSHA has very specific requirements on the sign colors, text, size and location, so be sure to familiarize yourself with those guidelines to remain compliant. To comply with ADA requirements, exit and stairwell signs also must include messaging in Braille.

What fire equipment signs do I need?

While NFPA 10 dictates that fire extinguishers must be present in almost all buildings, it falls short of regulating fire extinguisher signage. That being said, your business may be subject to local regulations that require a clear sign noting where the fire extinguisher can be found. To be safe in the case of an emergency—and during an inspection—invest in fire extinguisher signage. While you’re at it, it’s wise to pick up fire sprinkler signs, fire hose signs (if necessary) and fire alarm signs just to be sure your equipment can be found if it’s ever needed.  Fire Extinguishers must be inspected monthly and have a tag and log of inspection.

Where do you put exit signs?

UL listed Exit signs direct and lead you out of the building.   A pathmarking sign will lead you to all exit doors. All exit doors, whether they lead to the building exit or a hallway that leads to the building exit, must be clearly marked and well-lit in accordance with OSHA 1910.37 and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Any doors that do not lead to an exit and could be easily confused with an exit door should also be marked with a “No Exit” or “Not an Exit” sign. Even in hallways, bathrooms and storage areas, there must always be an exit sign within sight. If a hallway turns or curves, an exit sign or arrow must show the way to the nearest exit.

How do you display enter/exit signs?

All entrance/exit signs must meet the guidelines set out in OSHA 1910.37 and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Exit signs must be properly illuminated by a reliable light source with a minimum of 5 foot-candles on the illuminated surface. Exit signs should be mounted with the bottom of the exit no more than 80 inches (6’8”) above the top edge of the egress opening. Floor proximity exit signs require the bottom of the sign be mounted no less than 6” from the floor and no more than 18” above the floor.

Typically, emergency safety signage is purchased to help  those who are in a building at the time of an emergency, it’s also important to have safety signage that helps first responders remain safe once they arrive on the scene. Some roofs and floors include a structure called a truss. A truss uses several pieces of metal or wood to form a series of triangles. In the case of a fire, truss construction can pose a threat to firefighters. Some state and local fire marshals require specific truss construction signs to be hung at building entrances to notify firefighters of when this particular danger is present.
