When emergencies happen, it breaks the routine and can create unfamiliar circumstances, making it all too easy to slip up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s a fire breaking out, a machine breaking down, or a chemical spill, an emergency changes the norm. Even an outbreak of disease as simple as the flu can put schedules into flux and tax workers who suddenly find themselves working in areas they are less familiar with or having to cover more hours, leading to exhaustion.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What new hazards pop up when this happens? Talk to your employees about non-routine situations that have happened and what challenges they faced. Ask them to help identify hazards. You might be&nbsp; surprised by what you learn.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identify Hazards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review your emergency procedures for any potential safety issues. Then, try to think of any and all potential emergencies and identify hazards that could pop up in your business. Here are a few <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/shpguidelines\/hazard-Identification.html#ai4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested by OSHA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/compliancesigns.com\/products\/fire-emergency\/fire-extinguisher-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fires and explosions<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical releases<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/compliancesigns.com\/products\/chemical\/hazardous-material-surface-mount-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hazardous material spills<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/compliancesigns.com\/products\/safety-tags\/lockout-tagout-tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unexpected startups<\/a> after planned or unplanned equipment shutdowns<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonroutine tasks, such as infrequently performed <a href=\"https:\/\/compliancesigns.com\/products\/safety-tags\/repair-tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintenance activities<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structural collapse<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disease outbreaks<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/compliancesigns.com\/c\/evacuation-muster-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weather emergencies and natural disasters<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical emergencies<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace violence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergencies and non-routine situations change behaviors. Something as simple as a machine breaking down can cause distress as production goals, or even bonuses, become endangered. This can lead to rushing or even panic, which is not a safe work environment at all.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding Instead of Reacting<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two words, \u201creact\u201d and \u201crespond,\u201d can make all the difference in an emergency. Simply put, when you react, you are moving on instinct. A reaction is a quick reply to a situation with little to no thought involved. A response, on the other hand, is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to an emergency situation means jumping into action with some foreknowledge of what is required.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To minimize the dangers of emergency or non-routine situations, you want workers to respond instead of reacting. The key to making that happen is to plan for all scenarios and train your employees to respond accordingly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you ponder each emergency scenario, consider things like evacuation routes, personnel shifts, and protective equipment. Then, implement the training required, so each employee knows exactly what they need to do if the unthinkable happens.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life happens, and it\u2019s not always pretty, but being prepared for the worst can make it a lot less daunting if it does come to pass and minimize the damage. It\u2019s like those seatbelts in your car.
