{"id":626,"date":"2019-02-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/compliance-signs.local\/safety-pros-role-in-workplace-mental-health\/"},"modified":"2025-05-30T12:01:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T16:01:41","slug":"safety-pros-role-in-workplace-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.compliancesigns.com\/blog\/safety-pros-role-in-workplace-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Safety Pros Address Workplace Mental Health Issues?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a 2018 poll, <em>Safety+Health<\/em> magazine asked, &#8220;Should mental health in the workplace be part of the safety pro\u2019s responsibility?&#8221; The results were an even split between yes and no, with sound arguments on both sides of the question &#8211; as well as a consensus that injury prevention should remain the top priority of safety professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a recap of key points made in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com\/articles\/17489-its-not-an-easy-conversation-mental-health-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>S+H<\/em> article<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mental health concerns are both common and long-lasting. About 18 percent of the U.S. adult population (44.7 million, or nearly 1 in 5) has a mental illness in any given year, according to 2016 data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental health can affect worker safety. Even if no actual illness is diagnosed, it\u2019s easy to imagine how a worker\u2019s mental state might affect his or her ability to make good decisions and recognize potential hazards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workplace stress contributes to poor physical and mental outcomes. The damage stress causes to both physical and mental health is well-documented.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental health affects worker productivity and the bottom line. Significant evidence supports the connection between individuals\u2019 mental well-being and their ability to function at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-do-safety-professionals-fit-in\">Where do safety professionals fit in?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although mental health traditionally is addressed through the human resources department, safety professionals are in a good position to contribute to team mental-health efforts.
