Learn how to effectively measure the volume of noise.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, over twenty-two million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noise levels in their workplace. Equipment frequently producing excessive noise levels include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>manufacturing equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>power generators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aircraft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>heavy equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>saws &amp; drills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emergency vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>construction tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oil and gas drilling equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When noise levels are not safe, hearing loss will creep in for employees  &#8211; and high fines will impact employers. In 2017, U.S. businesses paid around $1.5 million in penalties for not employing adequate safety measures to protect workers from high noise levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Once it\u2019s gone, it\u2019s gone.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing damage can be prevented, but once the permanent noise-induced hearing loss occurs, it cannot be cured or reversed. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually, so you or your workers may not realize it is happening until it is too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to reduce exposure to hazardous noise in the workplace is to plan for potential exposure before activities start, measure the noise levels and follow OSHA requirements for noise and hearing conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing conservation programs strive to prevent initial occupational hearing loss, preserve and protect remaining hearing, and equip workers with the knowledge and hearing protection devices necessary to safeguard themselves, per <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/laws-regs\/regulations\/standardnumber\/1910\/1910.95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSHA CFR 1910.95<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s required per OSHA\u2019s hearing conservation program?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/noise\/hearing-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSHA\u2019s hearing conservation program<\/a><\/strong> is designed to protect workers with significant occupational noise exposures from hearing impairment by accurately identifying employees exposed to noise at or above 85 decibels (dB) averaged over 8 working hours, or an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When noise exposure levels equal or exceed an 8-hour time-weighted average sound level (TWA) of 85 decibels measured on the A scale, employers are required to provide hearing protectors. Hearing protectors or personal protection equipment (PPE) are required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For any period exceeding 6 months from the time they were first exposed to 8-hour TWA noise levels of 85 dB or above until they receive their baseline audiograms if these tests are delayed due to mobile test van scheduling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If they have incurred standard threshold shifts that demonstrate they are susceptible to noise; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If they are exposed to noise over the permissible exposure limit of 90 dB over an 8-hour TWA.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees are entitled to observe monitoring procedures and must receive notification of the results of exposure monitoring. Per the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/noise\/surveillance\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a><\/strong>, the dB of these items are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Power lawn mower:<\/em> 90 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Belt sander<\/em>: 93 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Tractor:<\/em> 96 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hand drill:<\/em> 98 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Impact wrench:<\/em> 103 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Bulldozer:<\/em> 105 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Spray painter:<\/em> 105 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Continuous miner:<\/em> 108 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Chainsaw:<\/em> 110 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hammer drill: <\/em>114 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Pneumatic percussion drill:<\/em> 119 dB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Ambulance siren:<\/em> 120 dB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring the noise volume in the workplace is critical \u2013 especially when working with any of the tools above.
