If you\u2019ve said these words already, you know it\u2019s going to be a frigid winter. When you\u2019re exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Low temperatures are inevitable around the holidays. That&#8217;s why knowing about these cold weather safety tips is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many workers, including construction, maritime, sanitation workers, police officers, emergency response, and recovery personnel are exposed to cold working environments in potentially freezing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think it\u2019s too soon to start preparing for winter months \u2013 it\u2019s not. Take the time to familiarize yourself with different types of symptoms to keep you warm and safe this winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working outside in cold weather can expose you to:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wetness\/dampness, dressing improperly, and exhaustion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Predisposing health conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor physical conditioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start work in extreme weather conditions be aware of the wind chill factor. The wind chill is the temperature your body feels when air temperature and wind speed are combined. Always bring extra clothing in case you get wet and need to change.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wear an inner layer of wool, silk, or synthetic to keep moisture away from the body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A middle layer of wool or synthetic to provide insulation even when wet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An outer wind and rain protection layer that allows some ventilation to prevent overheating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear insulated gloves and waterproof boots \u2013 or another equivalent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink warm sweetened fluids and stay hydrated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Track your physical condition and that of your coworkers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use proper engineering controls, safe work practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by your employer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beware of Cold Stress:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While these safety tips are important \u2013 it\u2019s also your employers\u2019 responsibility to provide workers with a place of employment that is free from recognized hazards, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/winter-weather\/cold-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>cold stress<\/strong><\/a>, which is causing or is likely to cause death or serious physical harm to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers should train workers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compliancesigns.com\/blog\/safety-tip-prevent-cold-stress-illness-and-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>how to prevent and recognize cold stress illnesses<\/strong><\/a> and injuries and how to apply first aid when needed.
