About Hazardous Material Identification:

The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard requires employers to educate and inform employees about hazardous chemicals they may be exposed to, and also requires distributors to transmit required information to employers. Notification tools include hazard communication programs, MSDSs, training and hazardous material identification labels.

OSHA 1910.1200 requires communication of chemical hazards, and lists labels as one of many appropriate methods. However, it doesn't specify a particular labeling system.

The NFPA 704 and other chemical hazard identification systems are intended for different audiences and also differ in their use of the white field. The resources below may help you choose the best system for your application.
